A meeting between your therapist and the parents / guardians. We prefer that children do not attend this session. The initial consult is where you, as parents / guardians, get to tell your therapist about your child.

To assess or not to assess: the answer to this depends on a number of things: a) Do you need a report for a Doctor or School? b) the reason for referral and c) goals of therapy.
At Cape Town Occupational Therapy we have numerous tools we use to assess different areas and age groups. In the initial consult, you and your therapist will decide on whether to assess and which assessment is best suited.
When an assessment is done, a report will be provided to the parents. However, if a formal assessment is not done, the family may request a report be written.

Once we have all the information and clear therapy goals, we can begin therapy. As a guideline, we generally start with a 45 minute session once per week for children under 6 years of age. Older children often benefit from longer sessions of 60 minutes, also weekly.
We at Cape Town Occupational Therapy like to treat each case individually. There is no one size fits all for therapy. Please get in touch with us so we can find the best solution to help you!

Intensive Therapy
Sometimes weekly sessions aren’t viable and then we recommend intensive therapy. Intensive therapy entails more sessions over a shorter period of time (i.e. 3 -5 sessions per week) for a few weeks. This is often done over holiday periods or if the child is not attending school. Intensive therapy blocks are recommended when families are eagre to achieve maximum results on a short period of time. Intensive therapies is also a great option for families traveling to South Africa from abroad looking.
